Counselling.. An Introduction
The Master of Counselling program is intended for students who wish to develop in-depth knowledge, skills and competencies for professional practice in counselling. Within this program students will develop the skills to competently serve individuals, couples, families, and groups in the community. It is a program that encourages a multi-disciplinary focus drawing students from a number of different discipline backgrounds including psychology, social work, education, nursing, medicine, human services, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy. It has also been popular with students of many different ages and nationalities. The program seeks to extend students' abilities to consider counselling within the broader social context in which people live their lives; as well as within individual client work.
The program provides a rich blend on content and experience being jointly run by the School of Psychology and the School of Social Work and Human Services. The cooperation of these two Schools allows us to call on the expertise and knowledge of both disciplines.
The UQ Master of Counselling program is currently one of the only PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) accredited counselling programs in Australia. The program is also accredited by the ACA (Australian Counselling Association). As such, the program upholds counselling practices that are in accord with professional codes of ethics and standards of practice of the professional associations in Australia.
